Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick Raises Concerns Over Proposed Rezoning in Memramcook, Calls for Stronger Protection of Farmland

Fredericton, NB – The Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick (AANB) is urging the Municipality of Memramcook to proceed with caution regarding a proposed rezoning request that would permit multi-family dwellings and row houses on agricultural land at 262 Central Street (PID 70725338).

AANB is calling on the Municipality of Memramcook to prioritize agricultural land-use protection within its planning framework and to defer approval of major residential developments on agricultural land until the full impacts on existing and future farm operations are clearly understood.

“Agriculture is the backbone of rural economies and a fundamental pillar of New Brunswick’s food security,” said Danielle Connell, President of the Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick. “Once productive farmland is lost, it is almost never recovered. Decisions made today must balance housing needs with the long-term ability of our province to feed itself, support farm families, and grow the agricultural economy.”

The Alliance emphasized that protecting the Right to Farm does not mean opposing housing development or ignoring community needs. Rather, it means proactive land-use planning that supports responsible growth while preserving productive farmland and reducing preventable conflicts between farms and new development.

Farmland Is Not Replaceable

Agriculture remains a significant economic driver in New Brunswick, with strong growth potential in the coming decade. Protecting agricultural land through thoughtful planning helps safeguard local food production, rural jobs, and municipal tax bases, while providing certainty for farmers and investors alike.

“The bottom line is simple,” Connell added. “Protecting farmland is protecting New Brunswick’s future.”
